In 1910 the Yiddish daily Forward warned of "The war between Chop Suey and Gefilte Fish" The Yiddish language and gefilte fish are the two threads connecting Ashkenazic Jewry worldwide, even as they divide the Jewish people into fiercely partisan camps. This presentation will examine classic and modern sources on the special Jewish connection to fish to time, fish to place, and fish to the Jewish imagination.
