Bayom Hahu: Zechariah's Interfaith Vision

We close our Jewish prayer services with the Aleynu, which ends with the wild interfaith vision of the prophet Zechariah: “On that day, God will be One, and God’s name will be One.” Who was this prophet, describing dreams and night visions so cryptic, even our greatest scholars are baffled by them? What did he envision as world religious unity - a single religion, a shared mystical experience, a comfort with diversity? How is his utopian vision relevant in our time of religious conflict? We will explore these questions through lecture, discussion, and text study.
